About Pete
Conservative Business Leader Transforms Nebraska Politics
Pete Ricketts emerged as a prominent conservative leader through his strategic blend of business acumen and public service. Born in 1964 as the eldest son of TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, he was raised in a family known for entrepreneurial success and principled leadership. Growing up in a business-oriented household, Ricketts developed a strong understanding of economic principles and conservative values that would shape his future political career.
After an early attempt to enter politics with an unsuccessful U.S. Senate bid in 2006, Ricketts remained committed to serving his state. In 2014, he successfully ran for governor of Nebraska, winning a competitive Republican primary and subsequently the general election. During his two terms as governor from 2015 to 2023, he established himself as a fiscally conservative leader focused on reducing taxes, controlling government spending, and promoting economic development across the state.
As governor, Ricketts distinguished himself through pragmatic policy-making and unwavering conservative principles. He approved significant budget reforms and tax cuts, demonstrating his commitment to limited government and economic growth. His administration was particularly noted for supporting law enforcement and maintaining a tough stance on criminal justice, including support for capital punishment. In 2018, he oversaw Nebraska's first execution in over two decades, underscoring his commitment to law and order.
Following his successful gubernatorial tenure, Ricketts transitioned to federal service when he was appointed to the U.S. Senate in January 2023, filling the vacancy left by Ben Sasse's resignation. Appointed by his gubernatorial successor Jim Pillen, he quickly won the special election to complete Sasse's term and is now running for a full term in 2026. As a senator, Ricketts continues to advocate for conservative principles, bringing his business background and executive experience to the national legislative stage.
Beyond his political career, Ricketts maintains strong ties to the business world, including partial ownership of the Chicago Cubs baseball team with his family. His multifaceted background as a businessman, governor, and now senator reflects a comprehensive approach to public service rooted in conservative values, fiscal responsibility, and a deep commitment to Nebraska's communities and citizens.
