About Andrew
Physician, Veteran, and Conservative Leader: The Andrew P. Harris Story
Andrew Peter Harris has emerged as a dedicated public servant and principled conservative leader representing Maryland's Eastern Shore and parts of Baltimore County. Born on January 25, 1957, Harris combined his medical expertise with a passion for public service, becoming the sole Republican in Maryland's congressional delegation and a prominent voice for conservative principles.
A trained anesthesiologist, Harris built an impressive medical career at Johns Hopkins University while simultaneously serving his country through military service. From 1989 to 1992, he served as a commanding officer in the Johns Hopkins Naval Reserve Medical Unit, demonstrating his commitment to both healthcare and national defense. His medical background provided him a unique perspective on healthcare policy and government healthcare systems.
Harris first entered politics at the state level, winning election to the Maryland Senate in 1998 after defeating incumbent F. Vernon Boozer in the Republican primary. He represented various districts in northeastern Baltimore County from 1993 to 2011, steadily building his political reputation and conservative credentials. In 2010, he successfully challenged incumbent Frank Kratovil in the general election, winning Maryland's 1st Congressional District and beginning his federal legislative career.
As a congressman, Harris has been a consistent conservative voice, advocating for limited government, fiscal responsibility, and traditional values. He has served on key committees and worked to address the needs of his district, which encompasses the entire Eastern Shore and several eastern Baltimore County suburbs. In a significant leadership development, Harris became chair of the House Freedom Caucus in September 2024, further solidifying his role as a prominent conservative legislator.
Throughout his political journey, Andrew Harris has exemplified a commitment to public service rooted in his medical training, military experience, and deep conservative principles. As the only Republican representative from Maryland, he continues to champion conservative policies and represent the interests of his constituents with dedication and integrity.
